What governments say
Israel's National Security Council
Level 4 – high threat
Don't go to Sinai, and leave if you're there. Covers all of Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula, including the South Sinai coast. Reaffirmed ahead of the September 2026 Jewish holidays.
Updated: August 18, 2026Official pageUS State Department
Egypt: Level 2 – exercise increased caution
"Do not travel" (Level 4) applies to northern and central Sinai. South Sinai isn't named separately, and border areas in Sinai are described as military zones.

No advice against travel to the coastal strip
Advises against all travel to North Sinai, and against all but essential travel to the northern part of South Sinai beyond the St Catherine–Nuweiba road, except the coastal areas. Warns the Taba crossing could close at short notice.

High degree of caution in Taba and Nuweiba
Avoid all travel to northern Sinai and non-essential travel north of the St Catherine–Nuweiba–El Tor road, except the Dahab–Nuweiba–Taba road and the towns of Nuweiba and Taba, where a high degree of caution applies.

What the travel warning means
A Level 4 warning isn't a ban, but it has practical consequences.
- Heads up
Level 4 is the highest
Israel's National Security Council recommends not going to Sinai and leaving if you're there. It's a recommendation, not a ban – the Taba crossing is open to Israelis – but the decision and the risk are yours.
- Info
Travel insurance
Some insurers state they cover medical treatment in Sinai despite the warning, subject to policy terms, while others may rely on the warning to refuse claims. Read the exclusions, and add extreme-sports cover if you dive or go on jeep trips.
- Info
The crossing can close
The Taba crossing runs 24/7 except on Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha, but the UK warns it could close at short notice. During wartime it has also served as a way out of Israel.

What happened on the coast in 2025–2026
What we found in reports from the past year and a half. It's no substitute for official advice.
- Info
During the wars with Iran
In June 2025 Egypt reinforced checkpoints in South Sinai and about 40,000 Israelis crossed at Taba. In March 2026, when Israeli airspace closed, the Taba crossing and Taba airport became a way out.
- Heads up
Missile alerts near Taba
In March 2026 the US Embassy in Cairo advised people in Sinai near Taba to sign up for Israeli Home Front Command alerts because of fire aimed at southern Israel.
- Heads up
The road is the real danger
In September 2026 at least 16 people were killed in a bus crash on the Dahab–Nuweiba road. Wear seatbelts, use a driver your camp recommends, and avoid driving at night.
- Info
Attacks on tourists
We found no reports of attacks on tourists on the South Sinai coast in 2025–2026. That doesn't mean there's no risk – only that we looked and didn't find any.

If you go anyway
A few simple habits from the NSC's recommendations and travellers' experience.
- Tip

- Tip
Someone at home knows where you are
Leave someone at home the name of the place, its phone number and your return date.
- Tip
Home Front Command alerts
Near Taba, Israeli Home Front Command alerts apply to you too, so keep the app running.
