  Paying in local currency is cheapest in Sinai. Dollars or shekels are accepted, but you almost always lose on the rate.

• Bring dollars

  There's an exchange desk and an ATM at the crossing. Small, clean dollar bills go down best – shekels much less so.

• Don't count on the ATM

  The ATM at the border gives a good rate, but it jams on busy days. Taba, Nuweiba and Dahab have more ATMs – the remote beaches don't.

• Ask prices in pounds

  With drivers, camps and shops – agree on a price in pounds before you start. It saves arguments at the end.
